Bangladesh faces severe onion shortage

Bangladesh is importing tonnes of onions to combat the severe shortage that the country is experiencing. Onions are a cooking staple in the country and have become far too expensive for the average person to afford. Even the Prime minister has removed the vegetable from her menu. The state has taken it upon itself to sell onions to the public at a discounted rate.

United Nations passes resolution condemning Myanmar's Rohingya abuse

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution with 134 yeas to 9 nays and 28 abstentions to demand an end to the Myanmar government's abusive treatment of its Rohingya minority, which has created more than 700,000 refugees that have fled to neighboring country Bangladesh. Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu-kyi, a Nobel Peace prize winner, has denied her government's alleged genocidal intentions against the Rohingya.

Indian citizenship bill protests turn violent

Around 2,000 people gathered in Dehli in order to protest the new propose citizenship bill that would grant nationalities to non-Muslim immigrants from neighboring Muslim majority countries. The bill has sparked fears of further discrimination of the Indian Muslim population. Many have also come out to protest in order to prevent the immigration the bill will cause.

Aidwatch study reveals 90% of EU aid never reaches the destination

An Aidwatch study from the European NGO group Concord found that 90 percent of the EU's aid, the world's single largest aid donor group, may never arrive at target countries. This is ascribed to 'inflated aid', which is aid tied to institutions in the donor country rather than to institutions in the developing country. Aidwatch also notes most EU countries' failure to contribute the agreed 0.7 percent of GDP.

Myanmar refuses ICC investigation into Rohingya deportation

Following the International Criminal Court's approval of a case filed by the Gambia, on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, alleging Myanmar's genocidal intentions in its treatment of the Rohingya, the Myanmar government has denied the probe and holds that the ICC does not have jurisdiction over its actions. Meanwhile, the ICC has upheld the position that the country must accept the investigation.
