'Black Pete' Dutch tradition sparks antiracism protests

Antiracism activists are organizing demonstrations to call for an end to the involvement of 'Black Pete' in the country's traditional celebration of the arrival of St. Nicholas. The character 'Black Pete' usually accompanies St. Nicholas in these celebrations, and is played by white people dressed in blackface and red lipstick, a practice the protesters say is hurtful to black people.
