Gotabaya Rajapaksa wins Sri Lanka presidential elections

The ex-defense chief, known for his role in ending Sri Lanka's civil war, won the presidential elections with 52.5 percent of the total votes, well above the 50% critical margin. Rajapaksa secured more than 6.9 million votes in all, while his closest opponent, Sajith Premadasa, lagged 1.3 million votes behind. Celebrating the victory, Rajapaksa reiterated his commitment to restoring the security of the nation, and to appoint his brother Mahindra as prime minister.
