Italy's death toll skyrockets past 1,000 as lockdown tightens

Italy, which has become the European country hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, saw a skyrocketing death rate yesterday, with an increase of 23 percent leaving 189 more dead, bringing the total to more than 1,000. As home to one of the oldest populations on earth after Japan, the country is suffering from an increased vulnerability to the coronavirus outbreak, despite tightened restrictions and quarantines.
