Temporary ceasefire in Gaza as casualties rise

Israeli forces and the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad reached a temporary truce in a meeting mediated by Egypt, two days after a surge of Israeli airstrikes killed 34 Palestinians including a top faction commander, in response to which militants rained down hundreds of rockets in the southern Israel region, marking the worst fighting in the Gaza Strip in months.
