The Stannard Rock lighthouse, located 40 km off the coast of Manitou Island, is known as the loneliest place in the world. The lighthouse is located in the northern half of Lake Superior, the world's largest freshwater lake, near the Keweenaw Peninsula, and serves to help ships navigate the extremely dangerous reefs around the area along with helping to monitor evaporation rates in the lake.
