'Yellow Vest' protest anniversary sees police use of tear gas, water cannons

Protests on the first anniversary of the anti-government 'Yellow Vest' protests in Paris saw French police firing tear gas canisters and water cannons to force protesters back after permissions for a demonstration were canceled. The protests have dwindled in the past few months, despite leaders' calls to action. Last year, the 'Yellow Vest' protests, which often clashed violently with French police, forced president Macron to delay significant unemployment and pension reforms.

Former French PM jailed along with wife over Fake Jobs

French ex-Prime Minister François Fillon and his Welsh wife have received jail sentences in a "fake jobs" case. Each was also fined €375,000. They appealed to block immediate detention. Fillon was found to have paid his wife €831,400. The scandal torpedoed Fillon's 2017 bid to become president. "The payment was disproportionate to the work done," the chief judge said. "Mrs. Fillon was hired for a position that was without use."

Thousands protested against Netanyahu in Tel Aviv

Protest organizers against Netanyahu in Tel Aviv marked 2,800 spots for protesters to stand Sunday evening. In the end, organizers say twice as many people showed up to protest against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Every two meters, an X designated a spot where someone could stand under Israel's social distancing guidelines. Even under the strictest limitations, protests were still allowed as long as they abided by the government's regulations
