Bougainville referendum on independence begins
Bougainville comprises of a series of islands in the Melanesian country of Papua New Guinea (PNG), and more than 200,000 of its citizens are going to vote in a historic referendum held regarding Bougainville's independence from PNG. The referendum marks the culmination of a long and violent movement that sparked a decade long civil war in PNG until a peace accord was signed in 2001.

Taiwan refuses China's 'Hong Kong model' unification proposal
Tsai Ing-wen, president of the island country of Taiwan, recently responded with a firm refusal to China's proposition of uniting the two countries under the so-called Hong Kong model, where Taiwan would be allowed to maintain its own political system while being part of China. Ing-wen stated that the Hong Kong model had clearly failed in Hong Kong, which saw rising anti-Chinese government protests and resentment last year.

Bougainville may become the world's newest country
The resource-rich islands in the East of Papa New Guinea are soon going to vote in order to decide whether or not the islands should become independent. There are currently 200,000 voters on the Bougainville islands and they will all cast their ballots on 23rd November. The referendum is coming as a result of a brutal civil war that ravaged the area for an entire decade.
