China starts crackdown in Hong Kong over violation of National Security Law

Hong Kong police department announced on Wednesday that they have made their first arrest since China’s national security law came into force. National Security Law says that a person who acts with a view to “undermining national unification” of Hong Kong with the mainland faces punishment of up to lifetime. Under the new law, many of Hong Kong’s protests that took place last year would be punishable by law

According to a statement released by China’s National Health Commission, the country reported 64 locally transmitted coronavirus cases, out of them, 57 were reported in Urumqi, Xinjiang’s capital. The number marks the biggest one-day rise in China since March. In the past two weeks, 280 cases have been confirmed nationwide.
