Facebook and Instagram experience major Thanksgiving outage

Both Facebook and Instagram stopped working on Thanksgiving day leaving millions of users unable to visit the sites or use the apps. Both apps are owned by the same company and share the same infrastructure, making it very likely that both will go down together. It is currently unknown what caused the outage.
