Pete Frates, the college baseball player whose struggle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) inspired the viral ALS ice bucket challenge in 2014 and raised 220 million USD for ALS charities, has passed away at the age of 34. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease is a motor neuron disease with no known cure.

The World Anti-Doping Agency has announced a unanimous ban on Russia from all major international sporting events due to doping noncompliance. They made this announcement after they launched a large investigation into the Russian government's practices. The investigation found that the government was conspiring with athletes to begin a state-sponsored doping program.

Ding Jinhui, 32-year-old Chinese snooker player ranked 16th in the world, beat Scotland's Stephen Maguire, ranked 14th, to acquire the UK Championship title for the third time. Ding last won the title more than a decade ago in 2009, and 2005 before that. With his third win, Ding becomes one of a handful of snooker players to have won the UK Championship thrice.

FIFA has announced that it will be changing the venue for the Club World Cup Final as the stadium where it was scheduled to be held at first has not been signed off yet.
